Getting Good Grades in College, Unlocked

Whether you’re an incoming freshman, a returning upperclassman, or the guardian of a prospective college student, you’ve likely heard the rumors that surround the kind of work it takes to get good grades in college. Stories of all-nighters, cramming sessions, copious amounts of caffeine, and apathetic professors can make getting good grades in college seem impossible. This recent article from the U.S. News and World Report is here not only to tell you it’s possible, but how to do it without sacrificing your health or sanity.
First and foremost, author Josh Moody emphasizes going to class. Though it can be incredibly tempting to skip that 8 AM when your dorm bed is so nice and cozy, getting up and going to class will pay off in the long run. Even if your professor posts notes or slides online, learning experts find over and over again that nothing beats being in class, taking notes, and listening to what the professor has to say.
Two more tips build off that foundation. Reading the entire syllabus – usually given out on the first day of class – and developing a relationship with your professor can both significantly help students get the best grade they can. Reading the syllabus will give you a heads up on important dates for the class and major assignments, which will give you the ability to plan ahead and not fall behind. Additionally, going to class and making friends with your professor will make them easier to approach in office hours when you have a question or are stuck on a tough concept.
If you find you’re keeping up with your homework and able to turn in assignments on time, you may even consider challenging yourself with harder material or working ahead in the class. If you challenge yourself, you’ll be ensuring that you get the most out of the class and if you work ahead, you’ll be lessening your load further down the line, giving yourself a much deserved break.
