For postsecondary students who started a career before attending school, paying to re-learn skills they already possess can be incredibly frustrating (and expensive).

But as Michaela Marx Wheatley writes in NewsOk, a program at Mid-America Christian University (MACU) aims to award up to 30 hours college credits to students who can demonstrate prior learning in a variety of areas, whether it’s the workforce, the military, or various other endevors.

“The concept behind the Prior Learning Program is that real knowledge comes from real experience,” Patty Clouse, Manager of Prior Learning, told NewsOk. “Rather than having adult learners repeat lower level classes, they can demonstrate that they already have this knowledge and move on to more challenging courses.”

Clouse says more people should take advantage of the program, lamenting that some students are intimidated by the idea of displaying their knowledge. (Students are expected to show in writing that their experience equates to the knowledge gained in a traditional course, or show certifications or licenses.) But with the upside of saving an incredible amount of both time and money, it’s probably a gamble worth taking.
