The Summer of 2018 Is Looking Bright for Internship-Seekers

Good news for job hunters looking for a summer internships—employer demand is up, according to search data and job listings from Indeed’s Hiring Lab. February’s postings are higher than either of the last two years, and March postings are expected to top those. (Early spring is typically when students and recent graduates are looking for jobs.)
Though postings are up, searches haven’t followed suit, writes Valerie Bolden-Barrett in HR Dive. What does that mean for employers? To get the best candidates, they’ll need to incentivize applicants. Collegegrad.com reports that demand for summer interns began rising in 2017, and this year looks be even more competitive. They recommend that companies get in the game early to capture candidates who are eager to get a jump-start on their search.
Part of what’s driving this trend might be rolled-back U.S. Department of Labor rules regarding interns, writes Bolden-Barrett. Although the Obama administration was strict in its enforcement of fair labor laws for interns, the new rules are predicted to increase the potential for companies to use low-cost or unpaid labor.
For now, it’s a sprint, as students and graduates line up to find meaningful internships that could potentially jump-start their careers.
